The Textbook & Academic Authors Association Conference Committee invites proposals for its 2024 Textbook & Academic Authoring Conference in Nashville, June 21-22, “Author Talk. Music to Our Ears.”
Presenting at TAA’s 2024 TAA Conference on Textbook & Academic Authoring provides an opportunity to share your knowledge, experiences, and ideas with other textbook authors, academic authors, and industry professionals.

The goals of this year’s program:

  • Explore and exchange ideas on the future of the textbook and academic authoring and publishing industry, especially emerging trends like AI.
  • Share successful writing tips and strategies and inspire you to complete your writing projects.
  • Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in academic and educational materials. 
  • Sessions will take place in three different tracks: General, Textbook, and Academic. Preference will be given to sessions that incorporate innovative and interactive elements.

We welcome proposals from first-time and veteran presenters! The deadline for submitting a proposal is October 15, 2023.
Program Tracks
General. Session proposals for this track should be of interest to textbook authors, academic authors, and industry professionals.

Textbook. Session proposals for this track should focus on areas of interest for textbook authors, both novice and veteran.

Academic. Session proposals for this track should focus on areas of interest for academic authors (authors of academic books, scholarly journal articles, published dissertations, etc.), both novice and veteran.
Guidelines for Submission
  • Presenters must register for the conference by February 1, 2024. TAA reserves the right to cancel any sessions whose presenters do not meet this deadline. Presenters are responsible for paying for and reserving their own lodging and other travel, and for providing their own handouts and other materials for their session. Presenters are not paid, but do receive a 50% discount on general registration.
  • Acceptance notifications will be sent by November 3, 2023. All presenters must accept their session by completing Speaker Agreement Forms by December 1, 2023.
  • TAA reserves the right to edit session titles and abstracts for the conference website and other publications.
  • Sessions will be recorded unless presenter states otherwise. Session abstracts and video recordings (if applicable) will be licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license and released openly following the conference. Authors retain copyright but will be required to sign a release granting nonexclusive publication rights to the conference. 
  • Sessions must be educational in nature and cannot be promotional or commercially biased.
  • The TAA Conference Committee strives to develop a program that represents our diverse community. Your proposal should strive to reflect diversity, equity and inclusion in its subject matter and images. If your session has more than two speakers, it should include diversity in gender, ethnicity, and thought and opinion.
Audience Levels
Novice: Aspiring or newly published textbook or academic authors.

Veteran: Textbook or academic authors with multiple academic or educational publications or textbooks in multiple editions, or with substantive industry experience.
Specific Areas of Focus
The Conference Committee is looking for proposals for the following topics:

  • Keeping your book alive/Coauthoring at end of career
  • Transitioning from academic to textbook publishing
  • Incorporating A.I.-generated materials into articles/textbooks
  • Critical examinations of A.I.
  • Advancing authorship in the digital realm
  • Continuous courseware
  • How to move into the world of public scholarship to extend your work (blogs, editorials, podcast, etc.)
  • Supporting emerging writers

Preference will be given to sessions that incorporate one of these specific areas of focus.

For the Novice Textbook Author: The Nuts & Bolts of Textbook Writing, Identifying a Publisher, Writing a Proposal, Negotiating a First Contract, Developing Pedagogy, Navigating Permissions, Selecting Visuals, Working with Editors, Working with Reviewers, Working with Indexers, Understanding Royalty Statements, Working With Coauthors, Marketing and Promotion.

For the Veteran Textbook Author: Publishing Multiple Editions, Managing Multiple Titles, Finding a Successor, Bringing on a Coauthor to An Established Textbook, Renegotiating Contract Terms, Protecting Your Pedagogy/Unique Textbook Concepts, Piracy, Copyright Infringement.

For the Novice Academic Author: The Nuts & Bolts of Academic Writing, Identifying a Publisher, Understanding Impact Factors, Working with Reviewers, Navigating Permissions, Selecting Visuals, Revise and Resubmit Process, Marketing and Promotion.

For the Veteran Academic Author: Transitioning Works/Co-Authoring, Learning How to Scale Back, Continuous Courseware, Changes in Publishing Environment

The Future of the Textbook and Academic Authoring and Publishing Industry. Digital Books, Piracy, AI, Open Access, Copyright Infringement.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Academic and Educational Materials. How to Incorporate DEI, Working With DEI Reviewers, Diversifying Authoring.

Other Topics: Contracts, royalties, open access, self-publishing, textbook proposals, pedagogy, visuals and illustrations, social media for academics, time management and productivity, supplements, marketing, eBooks, grant writing, the business of authoring, collaboration/working with coauthors.
Session Abstracts, Titles, Engagement Strategies, Takeaways
  • Session titles should be no more than 12 words and be creative and descriptive. 
  • Abstracts will be used as the public description of your session and should encourage people to attend. They should be no more than 150 words.
  • Session descriptions should include key session takeaways and the creative ways you will engage participants.
Session Formats
  • Presentation. A 60-minute session with 45 minutes of content and 15 minutes of Q&A.
  • Workshop. A two-hour interactive session that combines information and hands-on activities that allow attendees to practice concepts and interact with other participants.
  • Author Talks. A 5-10 Minute Ted-Talk style presentation that gives a quick take on an idea or strategy, demonstrates a concept or template, or is thought-provoking. Depending on the number of accepted proposals, these presentations will take place over a 60- or 90-minute period. Presentations can include a PPT or be verbal only, and can demonstrate a concept, template, share an individual strategy, or be thought-provoking.
Presenter Requirements
  • Presenters must register for the conference by February 1, 2024. TAA reserves the right to cancel any sessions whose presenters do not meet this deadline. 
  • Presenters are responsible for paying for and reserving their own lodging and other travel, and for providing their own handouts and other materials for their session. Presenters are not paid, but do receive a 50% discount on general registration.
  • For sessions with more than one presenter, the primary presenter is responsible for notifying all co-presenters of acceptance, rejection, scheduling and any other information provided by TAA.
  • Presenters cannot submit proposals for more than two sessions.
Selection Process
The Conference Committee strives to develop a program that provides a strong value to attendees. Preference will be given to sessions that incorporate innovative and interactive elements and that support or include diverse perspectives. Proposals are reviewed based on topic relevance, session outcomes, value to attendees, and expertise/knowledge of the presenter(s). TAA reserves the right to reject or ask for changes to sessions, and to combine similar presentations into panels. Acceptance notifications will be sent by November 3, 2023.

Reach textbook & academic authors to promote your unique product, leveraging both online communications and in-person networking at the only conference dedicated solely to textbook and academic authoring. We will work with you to identify a package that fits your budget and meets your needs.
Terms & Conditions
Eligible Companies
Organizers reserve the right to determine the eligibility of any Company or Product and further reserves the right to reject any application.

Sponsor Commitment & Payment
Sponsor opportunities must be secured via sponsorship form. TAA requires 100% payment to secure a support opportunity; either via credit card at the time of sign-up, or via wire transfer, ACH transfer, or check within 30 days of sign-up. Only after payment and signed Terms and Conditions are received will an official commitment exist between Organizers and Company. Sponsors with an unpaid balance or new sponsors who sign up after March 1, 2024, may not receive full support benefits.

Cancellation
Cancellation of support may be made by writing to [email protected]. Cancellations made between August 7, 2023, and February 29, 2024, will receive a refund of 50%. No refunds for cancellations will be made after March 1, 2024.
